Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the right to challenge specific calls from the chair umpire, echoing the system already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of reviews a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
