British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountains just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several access tunnels down to the depot... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey commented. "They were part of numerous British personnel stationed over the festive period. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
